A & J Bistro in East Hanover offers a straightforward, authentic Taiwanese and Chinese dining experience that feels like a miniature trip to Taiwan’s bustling night markets. This no-frills spot is best suited for those who want hearty, well-prepared takeout or a casual sit-down meal centered around classic Taiwanese comfort foods.

The atmosphere inside tends to be lively and a bit bustling, especially on weekend evenings, reflecting its popularity among locals craving genuine flavors rather than frills. Seating is functional, and the service team is friendly and efficient, focusing on freshly made-to-order dishes that reward a short wait—like their steamed soup dumplings which take about 15 minutes but come worth it.

The menu is broad but thoughtfully curated. You can reliably find staples such as the Chinese-Style Fried Pork Chop with Rice (排骨飯), braised pork sauce rice and egg, spicy wontons, and comforting bowls of spicy beef tendon noodle soup. For snack lovers, Taiwanese popcorn chicken and scallion pancakes offer tasty finger-food options that carry the distinctive taste of Taiwan’s street food culture. Diners who enjoy variety will appreciate the many small dishes available, making it easy to mix and match for a personalized meal experience.

People who seek homestyle Taiwanese flavors with consistent quality tend to return, some even traveling from nearby cities just to satisfy that craving. Lunch visits before 12:30 pm often avoid the typical Friday night crowd, which gets quite lively as the dinner rush fills the place. The vibe, while sometimes a little noisy when busy, adds to the feeling of genuinely popular neighborhood eatery.

Although most dishes hit the mark, some side items like the tofu with thousand-year egg haven’t always matched expectations, especially in terms of texture. Still, for those chasing authenticity and value, A & J Bistro’s rich, savory noodles, well-balanced soups, and fresh dumplings offer a satisfying and reliable experience.

In sum, A & J Bistro is great for diners who want to dive into Taiwanese comfort food in a casual setting without waiting for fancy presentations. It’s ideal for weekday lunches, casual dinners, or quick takeout runs when craving reliable, home-style Asian flavors with a touch of community buzz.

Like going to Taiwan, which I have done many times. Authentic well-prepared and inexpensive. Crispy duck is a new dish that was excellent. Everything is made to order and fresh. The steamed dumplings take 15 minutes but are worth it.

My go-to place for comfort food. PROS: - Many small dishes I can order several different every time. - The Chinese style fried pork chop rice (排骨馅饼) and Pan fried beef pan (牛肉馅饼) are all time best and quality are consist for years. - For lunch, most of time no waiting if get there before 12:30 CONS: - Bean curd with thousand year egg (皮蛋豆腐) was disappointing. Supposed to use soft tofu but they might use the firm tofu (not 100% sure) the taste was tough and dry. Also the egg was not sliced, chef expected we helped ourself with table knife ;( - 3% fee for credit card or you have to pay by cash, or Zelle/Venmo them.

Excellent food! Authentic and great food. We're Asian and we can tell this restaurant is legit. Good staff, very busy on Friday night (because food is good). Noisy when busy as expected in a good restaurant. Pop corn chicken, pig trot, wanton, xiao long bao, beef noodles are all great - none of what we ordered disappointed, all good.

My boyfriend first discovered A & J Bistro during a business trip to New Jersey and fell in love with their food. This time, while we were vacationing in New York City, he actually drove all the way from NYC just so we could eat here — and it was absolutely worth the trip! The food is authentic Taiwanese, full of flavor and nostalgia. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the prices are very reasonable. We’ll definitely come back again whenever we visit the area!
